Effect of quenching media on mechanical properties of welded mild steel plate

Quenching is a swift way of returning metal back to ambient temperature in order acquire certain property. Although it often used enhance the hardness metals and their micro-structure, equally causes serious variation mechanical physical properties metals. This research focuses on quenching media's effect microstructure 150mm x 80mm 8mm welded mild steel plate through microscopic examination, metallography mounting, surface grinding, polishing. Microstructural analysis with impact test was carried out using water, air, oil as media. The results show Vickers Pyramid Number (HV) for oil, air be 284.2, 270.9, 262.2 HV base metal, heat affected zone (HAZ), weld (WM), respectively. amount energy absorbed by three specimens during fracture 23.12, 25.27, 26.83 J, further indicates that water-quenched media exhibited mostly martensitic structures held austenite many cementite while martensite phase refined grains individually. It therefore concluded more suitable cool damping applications engineering.
